Royal blood

All of the official Disney princesses are of royal blood or married into royal families except for one. Can you guess which princess isn't technically royalty?

The right credentials

So how does a character become an official Disney Princess? Three things: The princess must have a primary role in a Disney animated feature film, she must be human or mostly human-like (sorry, Nala), and she cannot appear as the new star in a sequel (i.e. The Little Mermaid, II). The title of "Princess" helps, but is not a requirement.

Watch the throne

Famed princesses Elsa and Anna from Frozen are not official Disney Princesses... yet. It's rumored they will be accepted into the in-crowd soon.

We're all a little evil

If Elsa is accepted into the band of official Disney Princesses, she'll be the first that was based off of an evil character, the Snow Queen.

Princess OGs

The original official Disney Princesses were announced in 2000 and were as follows: Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan and Tinker Bell.

Rules of the kingdoms

Each official Disney princess holds their own franchise, kept separate from the franchises of their respective films. This allows Disney to make clear cut rules when it comes to licensing and appearances of official princesses.

You can't sit with us

Not every Disney princess is an official member of the Princess franchise. Official Disney royalty is like an elite club. It wouldn't be cool if everyone could get in!

Heavy is the head that holds the crown

Several Disney princesses are not included in the official roster, including: Giselle from Enchanted, Megara from Hercules, Leia from Star Wars, Melody from The Little Mermaid II, and Tiger Lily from Peter Pan.

Holding her own

The only official princess without royal blood (by birth or marriage) is Mulan. You go, girl!

Disney Princesses are priceless. However ...

There is a small island called Niue that has Disney Princesses (as well as other Disney characters) printed on their currency. Make it rain, Disney royalty!

Each official princess has her own official number. Snow White is, of course, No. 1.

A Fairy Princess, perhaps

Tinker Bell is no longer considered an official Disney Princess. Fairies have a world all their own.

Doing her own thing

Tinker Bell may not be an official Disney princess anymore, but she has her own franchise: Disney Fairies. The fairies franchise began in 2005.

Stop looking at me

Whenever the official princesses are pictured together in official Disney imagery, they never make eye contact with each other. This keeps their mythologies separate.

It's called The PRINCESS and the Frog for a reason

In 2010, Tiana was officially sworn in as a Disney Princess, replacing Tinker Bell's spot in the official princess lineup.

Young and in love

The Disney princesses are BABIES. Snow White is supposed to be 14, Jasmine is 15, Belle is 17, Pocahontas is 18 and Cinderella is 19.

Hollywood status

Snow White is the only Disney Princess with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. (Tinker Bell also has a star, but is no longer an official princess).

They've had some work done

The princesses underwent a redesign in 2012 and 2013. The slight lightening of Mulan, Jasmine and Pocahontas' skin didn't sit well with a number of critics.

Aurora is the most soft-spoken princess. She had only 18 minutes of screen time and 18 lines of dialogue in Sleeping Beauty.

Official Princesses, IRL

Some lucky princesses have Disney-produced live-action movies. Cinderella, starring Cate Blanchett and Lily James, was released in 2015 and made $70 million in its first weekend.

A live-action Beauty and the Beast is scheduled for a 2017 release and will star Emma Watson.

Sofia of Sofia The First is also not considered an official Disney Princess. Could it be because she's a television princess without her own film? It's unknown.

Let down your hair

Rapunzel joined the official Disney Princesses in 2011. Though her larger eyes make her look a bit different than the original lineup of official princesses, she still has an overall official Disney Princess look. She helped usher in the new, modern look of an official Disney Princess.

A new generation of princess

The first official Disney Princess from a Pixar film is Merida from Brave. Being born a princess, Merida was a shoo-in for getting onto the official Disney Princess roster. It helped that her movie was extremely successful.

Bull's-eye!

Merida and Mulan are the only two official princesses who are also archers.

True inspiration

Pocahontas is the only princess based on a real person. The real Pocahontas was much younger when she met John Smith, and the story didn't go down quite like a fairy tale.

Legend has it

Mulan is based on the legend of Hua Mulan, a female warrior first described in a poem called the Ballad of Mulan. There's no way to know whether or not the legend is based on an actual person.

Walt Disney said that his favorite piece of animation was the transformation of Cinderella's rags into a ball gown.
